Not just a cheap ploy to get Carrie Fisher fans onto my site… I speak literally… the edge being the beautiful East Sussex coast where we spent a few days of the half term holiday. We managed to secure the only room available in the whole of the Hastings area for Bank Holiday weekend at Leeford Place Hotel. I’m hoping my trusty webmaster will illustrate this piece with sketches of the various places we visited. Highlights were a wonderful medieval fair right outside Battle Abbey on that glorious Bank Holiday Monday.
Locals were costumed in full medieval reenactment garb, I felt like I was back in Spamalot. There was even a demonstration of how to wear chainmail. The wearer had shrunk by a foot afterwards.
That was our only head nod to culture.
Our seaside needs were fully catered for with the ‘We’ve seen you coming’ total rip off amusement arcade where my kids could scarcely believe their luck to have won a Michael Jackson key ring and a frisbee for the speculation of a mere twenty quid. Bah humbug. I thought the crazy golf money better spent if only for the amusement of seeing what sore losers kids can be when mummy and daddy are actually better than them at something.
I must mention one of the many culinary delights we experienced. We ate twice at White’s Restaurant in Hastings. All the dishes were great but the Roast Belly of Pork I had was seriously the best I’ve had anywhere. Crackling to die for.
We spent time in Rye too with its oh so beautiful cobbled streets.
Last night found me back at Waterloo East Theatre after nine months! I was part of a very illustrious line up for a showcase night of the music of Dan Gillingwater who is a fine songwriter. He had leading jazz pianist James Pearson heading up a superb line up of musicians to accompany us. Dan’s wife, the gorgeous Sarah Redmond hosted the evening and the audience were treated to a succession of great performers and songs. Names you might know included Beverley Klein and Richard Dempsey. Jazz diva Louise Marshall did a stunning rendition of Mr Right. I shall be rushing to see her gig with Jools Holland when they come to Waddesdon Manor this summer.
The whole evening has given me an itch to get jazzing again. I’m looking forward to hooking up with Kevin Amos and Mark Steyn again soon to record some cool yule tunes again for our incremental Christmas album.
Will update you all soon…
And the Spamalot tour comes to the end of its present stint in Southampton this week. I wish them all a very fond end of run.
